The image, taken by Amy Weston for WENN news agency, has raced around the world online - with many people asking if it was fake.

But Jonathan Grassi of WENN's photo desk, told smh.com.au this afternoon the image was genuine and was part of a series of photos captured by Weston for WENN in the late evening during the third night of riots in London.

"It's slowed down our website because everyone is linking to it and tweeting it," he said about the company's online photo database.

The images show the unidentified woman sitting on some sort of awning or sign outside a window, appearing to look down at the ground below.

The woman then jumps away from the window and falls into the raised arms of the emergency services personnel standing on the pavement.

The last shot shows the group crowded around the woman, standing on a line of tram tracks on the street.

It is not known what happened to the woman, if she was hurt and she was eventually taken to a hospital.

Local newspaper The Croydon Advertiser said its reporter, Gareth Davies, saw residents and police helping others jump out of their homes on to mattresses and other items below.

The photo was first tweeted online by a journalist working for The Daily Mirror, James Robertson, who appeared to have snapped a photo of the image on a computer.
