Residents of Castellammare di Stabia feared the presence of devil worshippers in their town.

A priest carried out an exorcism from a helicopter over an Italian seaside town in a bid to banish evil.

Locals at Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples said incidents, including the desecration of graves, crosses placed upside down, thefts from churches and Madonnas thrown off cliffs, suggest the presence of devil worshippers.

"If Satan exists, he has taken control of Castellammare di Stabia. There was nothing left but to try the exorcist," the prayer group that called in the exorcist said in a statement.

The exorcism took place on July 9 and it was unclear yet whether it had the desired effect, The Independent reported.
