Prince Charles says his first grandson is marvellous.

Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to the 8 pound, 6 ounce (3.8 kilogram) baby boy at 4.24pm Monday (3.24am Tuesday NZT) at London's St Mary's Hospital.

Charles and his wife Camilla got their first glimpse of the little one, just before Kate and Prince William introduced him to the hordes of media waiting outside .

"I'm thrilled," Charles said.  Camilla, spoke of a "wonderfully uplifting moment for the country", saying Charles would make a "brilliant" grandfather.
