Fiji's self-appointed Prime Minister said New Zealand's Deputy High Commissioner was expelled from the Pacific nation as a message to "leave us alone".

Commodore Voreqe (Frank) Bainimarama said New Zealand had to "stop this bullying".

"If you bully people there'll be some retaliation," he told TV One's Sunday programme.

Deputy High Commissioner Todd Cleaver was kicked out of Fiji earlier this month simply because he was a representative of New Zealand, Cmdre Bainimarama said.

"We tried to send New Zealand a message, New Zealand has been telling us that they want to destroy our economy, destroy our judiciary and we want to tell New Zealand - stop that."

He also said New Zealand's travel ban on members of the Fijian regime meant he could not attend rugby games, visit family or get medical care in New Zealand.

He said he was committed to holding a democratic election in 2014 after missing numerous deadlines set internationally.

Prime Minister John Key said New Zealand had been trying to work constructively with Fiji when Cmdre Bainimarama decided to "kick out more people".

Mr Cleaver arrived home on November 5 and the High Commission in Suva was closed.

Australia's High Commissioner James Bartley was also told to leave Fiji.

alex. he wants no part of NZ. does not want to go there for medical care. what do we have real friends like china and india for ? india provides him with stately care, if need be. time to kick the kiwi habit.

If he wants New Zealand to leave him alone he should stop whining about not being able to get medical care here.

All the big countries like NZ and Australia will always remind us Pacificains about the word 'democracy'...Is it not GOD"S name!! Any small country who wants to isolate itself will punished by sanctions in the name of god democracy...another continuation of colonialism. We in the Pacific do not need their democracy, we have our own way to lead our country, through the Vanua, the respect, that our chiefs symbolysed...

Yes leave Fiji alone .It is running along nicely now. There is no fear in the local people and tourism is picking up. I would suggest that those people who unashamedly condenm Fiji should get out of their shells and pay this paradise a visit and see for themselves . Corruption is being rooted out which takes time as it was so ingrained by previous governments. Fiji will get the job done but everything takes a little longer to achieve here. Roads are being repaired regularly now and Suva has been declared a crime free area. ugar growers are going back to there farms now that land leases are being renewed. How would you all react if all of a sudden we ended up with a Chinese military base here?

Edward, mughabe kicked white people off the country. Frank is doing the opposite, bringing back the indians lost through brain drain as a result of dubious racist democracy. huge difference mate. mughabe divided his country. half of fiji is full of life now because they finally got recognized as equal humans, thanks to frank. but this would be hard for u or aussies to understand. it took how many years for the aussies to recognize the wrong done to the aborigines again ?

It was a classic moment when Frank pointed out who else besides US, Australia and NZ are opposed to fiji ? the TVNZ reporter was caught off guard and had no answer. that's what around 1% of the countries in the world ! we don't need NZ dollars or aussie ones, we need china, india and the greater world coming to fiji. change also means to be done with the tasman 2. that will be easy. the hard part-also getting rid of the rugby ball, so we have nothing in common with NZ.

Why does Fiji have so many coups? Something is fundamentally wrong. Maybe it takes a "Big Chief Bunny Rabbit" to sort out. If you live in a country you appreciate more of what is going on. The last election in Fiji was racially biased and rigged. And that is democracy that NZ and Aus seem to want in Fiji. I don't agree with gun law but if NZ had been smart and offered every assistance to Fiji to correct its electoral system and move it quickly to a truly democratic system then we wouldn't be looking at 2014. Instead NZ keeps poking a stick at this guy, slapped bans etc etc, so what do you expect - the guy to like you? One other thing, every time you see Fiji on the TV news they trot out old footage of army on the street as if it is today's news. There are more armed police and army on NZ's dangerous streets than in Fiji. You will not find an army guy in Fiji with a gun. But finally Fiji wants a true democracy in the hope of putting an end to a coup culture. Fiji people are great. It's a great place to visit and safe. And if you don't want to visit because of Bainimarama, your choice, but if you did you would certainly be able to get a better perspective of what Fiji people think. Not all positive, not all negative but you may be surprised. And they still love to smile and laugh.

Steve#5: So when did Fiji have an elected President? I mean elected by the people, not by elite Fijians alone? Bainimarama is doing what no person (politician) in Fiji had the guts to do, clean the country of racism and corruption, and I hope the guy sticks to his word only, and so far he has. And Steve please remember, as you will see how the American soldiers treat the Afghanistan and the Iraqi people, not with garlands but with guns, same with Banimarama, because he is a soldier as well.

I'm with Edward - i too will be leaving them alone, and my tourist dollars will be benefiting other places - I encourage others to do the same. :)
