A large tropical cyclone has formed near Fiji and is expected to hit its islands tomorrow.
Tropical Cyclone Thomas is currently northwest of the French Pacific islands of Wallis and Futuna, and is expected to hit Fiji from Sunday afternoon, Radio NZ International has reported.
The Fiji Metservice says Thomas is now a category two system but is expected to increase to a category three, or possibly a category four system, its website says.
Fiji’s emergency services are on emergency alert, preparing for gale force winds, thunderstorms and damaging heavy swells.
Another large storm between Fiji and the Solomons could also develop into a cyclone and head south.
