Cyclone heading to Cook Islands holiday resort
The Cook Island's popular luxury holiday spot Aitutaki is battening down today as Cyclone Garry heads toward it.
The island, which has a resident population of around 2000 serving several exclusive resorts, was expecting damaging gale force winds over the next 24 hours, the Tropical Cyclone Centre in Fiji said..
Garry formed earlier this week over the French Wallis Island and briefly threatened cyclone damaged Samoa and neighbouring American Samoa.
It veered off that course but was now moving south east through the Cook Islands.
The centre said the cyclone was now category and was about 550 kilometres north west of Aitutaki.
It was also expected to bring rough seas and strong winds to Palmerston Atoll, home to about 50 people.
