Former Samoa rugby international Brian Lima has been charged with assaulting a former wife, the Samoa Observer reports.

Police Assistant Commissioner Fauono Talalelei told the Observer Lima had been charged with actual bodily harm of Lemalu Sina Retzlaff and being armed with a dangerous weapon, and will appear in court on January 13.

Retzlaff said she had been divorced from Lima for two years.

The 41-year-old Lima - known in Samoa by his matai title Muliagatele - is a member of the International Rugby Board hall of fame in honour of his achievements with Manu Samoa.

He made his debut for Manu Samoa in 1990 and featured in the 1991 World Cup win over Wales. He was the youngest player at the 1991 Rugby World Cup, and retired after his record fifth World Cup in 2007.

He is now an assistant coach for the Samoan Under-18 squad.
