Emergency services are working to free a person from a trench in New Windsor.

A worker has been critically injured after a trench collapsed at a construction site in New Windsor, West Auckland.

The man was initially trapped in the ditch on the driveway of a house on New Windsor Rd, but was freed in about 40 minutes by fire crews on Thursday afternoon.

The worker was removed in a stretcher, wearing an oxygen mask - he was shirtless, and appeared to be conscious.

He was loaded into an ambulance before being taken to Auckland hospital.

A spokeswoman for St John said the man was in a critical condition.

A neighbour said work had been under way to lay pipes on the street for weeks. The injured man was a digger driver for Blake Civil Construction, he said.

WorkSafe said it had been notified and was making inquiries.

The man was removed from the trench by firefighters and loaded into an ambulance by paramedics.
