Worker injured after trench collapses in New Windsor, West Auckland
A worker has been critically injured after a trench collapsed at a construction site in New Windsor, West Auckland.
The man was initially trapped in the ditch on the driveway of a house on New Windsor Rd, but was freed in about 40 minutes by fire crews on Thursday afternoon.
The worker was removed in a stretcher, wearing an oxygen mask - he was shirtless, and appeared to be conscious.
He was loaded into an ambulance before being taken to Auckland hospital.
A spokeswoman for St John said the man was in a critical condition.
A neighbour said work had been under way to lay pipes on the street for weeks. The injured man was a digger driver for Blake Civil Construction, he said.
WorkSafe said it had been notified and was making inquiries.
