Police are seeking information from the public after an aggravated robbery at Z service station in Onetangi on Waiheke Island.

A man with a machete robbed the Z petrol station in Waiheke's Onetangi on Monday night.

Waiheke Island police are investigating the aggravated robbery.

A man in a balaclava threatened the sole service station attendant with a machete at about 9.50pm, Sergeant Marty Felton said.

Two till drawers containing cash were stolen.

The offender was described as a tall male, with a slim athletic build, wearing a black puffer jacket and jeans.

Felton said the service station attendant was traumatised, but not injured.

Onetangi resident Tom French said the attendant came to his house asking for help and was "very shaken".

"It was a Monday night and we were chilling out and suddenly this guy is freaking out on our driveway. It's not very Waiheke, is it?" French said.

The attendant had escaped without trying to stop the robbery and police soon arrived to search the scene, French said.
