Smoke was pouring out across State Highway 16 on Wednesday evening after a car fire.

A car has been engulfed in flames on Auckland's Northwestern Motorway, smothering both sides of the arterial route with smoke. 

Danielle Clent said she saw the car "engulfed in flames" as smoke poured across both sides of the motorway on Wednesday night.

Firefighters were busy extinguishing the fire according to a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson.

They were called to the scene at 7.42pm, the spokesperson said.

There was no indication of a crash, or that anybody was inside the vehicle. 

A spokesperson for police said the car was partially blocking the Royal Rd off-ramp.
