Waka Ama crew rescued after vessel capsizes in Papakura Channel
A Waka Ama crew, some without lifejackets, found themselves capsized and adrift Wednesday night after their boat capsized
Police said they were called to the Papakura Channel in Auckland at 7.36pm on Wednesday after a six-person Waka Ama was reported as "in trouble and off-course".
A police spokesperson said the Waka Ama had capsized and all of its six person crew were found and rescued in the space of half an hour.
Three of the crew were found without lifejackets and Auckland Metro shift Inspector, Jason Greenhalgh said the incident could have turned out differently if staff hadn't been available to locate them.
"It's a shame that not all had been wearing life jackets."
The Police Maritime Unit, an Eagle Helicopter, and an Auckland Airport Hovercraft were all used in the rescue.
