About 50 firefighters were called to the blaze.

Fifteen trucks, two support units, a hazardous materials truck and an aerial crane were called to the site, near AUT University.

A witness said the fire had been extinguished about 5.30pm.

Firefighters had removed their breathing apparatus and were "quite calm", he said.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said about 50 firefighters responded to the third-alarm call.

The building was evacuated and no one was injured, he said.
