Data plays an important role in the background to the Future Streets project.

Auckland road safety data between 2007 and 2011 put Mangere Central as the fourth most dangerous area for fatal and serious crashes.

Nearly half of the top 20 were south Auckland communities.

Four cyclists have been involved in serious or minor crashes around the Mangere Town Centre alone between 2012 and 2016.

Twenty six per cent of the fatal or serious crashes in Mangere Central involved a pedestrian or cyclist.

Elected representatives in Mangere then acted on this information.

Between 2012 and 2016, there were 271 crashes in the Future Streets area - ranging from fatal, serious, minor and non-injuries - Auckland Transport data shows.

In that time, there were four fatalities and 20 cases of serious injuries resulting. There 68 cases of minor injuries.

The full impact of the improvements made under Future Streets can't been seen just yet as the project has only been finished.

But already some data is showing that motorists are at least slowing down - particularly around Nga Iwi School.

About 85 per cent of speeds measured outside the school on Mascot Ave were 47kmh before the project began.

The speed limit around schools is 40kmh.

But following improvements that speed has dropped 10kmh for traffic heading northbound. For southbound traffic the speed was measured at 39kmh.

AT estimates it will be able to assess its effectiveness in three to five years time.
