Waimauku man Shaun Garea creates free web comic

When writing a comic book, superheroes are usually what come to mind – but not for Shaun Garea.

The West Auckland man is creating a free web comic The Legend of Gareus, and the main character is based on United States president Donald Trump.

"A lot of comics nowadays are very superhero-based or very action. This is not really based on any of that, it's very character driven," the 35-year-old said.

The main character, Gareus, is a bit of a "narcissist" who does bad things and has no guilt for it, he said.

"We have a few personalities in politics who fit that sort of bill quite well."

Garea said by page five of the comic, readers would be able to tell that the main character was partly inspired by Trump.

Garea said he had grown up enjoying comics and would copy them panel for panel.

With a background in film, he was always creating storyboards, similar to comic panels.

He said his interest in comics peaked again when he saw authors weren't just focused on superheroes and decided he would create one himself.

"People can use the medium in very, very interesting ways," he said.

He said his favourite part about creating the comic is the visual element.

It was the combination of art and language that he found most interesting – and difficult.

"With a comic page, you've got to be aware of where every picture is and how it flows. That's the most challenging part for me, just figuring out how to tell the story visually once you already have an idea of what you want to tell through words," he said.

The Legend of Gareus currently has seven pages, with Garea hoping to add a new page every month.

"It's quite difficult. There's a lot of work involved," he said.

"The idea is to build it up to a certain level and then publish it in print as well."

Having collaborated with other comic book authors for other pages, he said he was always on the look out for other people to work with.
