Finding peace through meditation is the subject of an upcoming film screening in Papakura.

Hawkins Theatre is hosting the feature length documentary A Mindful Choice which follows the lives of people around the world who practise the mantra-style Ascension meditation.

Filmmakers Greg Hopkinson and Sally Lewis, both Ishaya monks from New Zealand, travelled the world meeting people who have found peace through the technique as part of the documentary.

Some of the people, including prisoners in a high security Mexican jail, have experienced remarkable changes in their lives as a result.

Foster kids, business people, patients with terminal cancer and professional ballet dancers are among other people interviewed.

"These people are finding real peace, often against incredible odds. It shows true freedom is in everyone's reach. With the film we want to show more people that peace is possible," Hopkinson says.

Meanwhile, Lewis says the film is about inspiring people and showing "that there is a different way of being".

Hopkinson and Lewis also run Ascension meditation classes in New Zealand. Some local prisons, including Waikato's Waikeria Prison, have started meditations classes with positive results.

*The film was selected for the 2016 Awareness Film Festival in Los Angeles. It screens at Hawkins Theatre, 13 Ray Small Dr, September 28, 10am.
