A teenager suffered serious spinal injuries after diving head first into a water hole in the Hunua Ranges, south east of Auckland.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew the boy to Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital in a serious condition.
Emergency services rushed to the scene about 12pm on Thursday.
The teenager remained in Starship in a serious condition, an Auckland District Health Board spokeswoman said.
It is not yet clear where exactly the teenager attempted to dive.
The Hunua Ranges cover a 250sqkm area of hilly country to the southeast of Auckland.
Its hills, lakes and rivers are popular with locals and tourists, with the Hunua Falls on the Wairoa River a particularly well known spot.
