Orewa and Red Beach surf lifesavers receive service awards
Orewa and Red Beach Surf Lifesavers were honoured with special Service Awards at the weekend.
The north Auckland surf lifesavers Benny Larsen, Faron Turner, Kevin Cornish and Colleen Murphy were recognised at the New Zealand Surf Life Saving annual Awards of Excellence for their dedication and hard work.
Orewa club member Larsen received a Service Award on the evening and Turner was given the Distinguished Service Award.
Red Beach members Cornish and Murphy also received Service Awards.
The event at the Heritage Hotel saw 49 people receive awards for all the hard work they have put into helping their local communities over the years.
Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club President John Chapman said Larsen and Turner were well overdue for recognition.
"Benny has been a member since the 1970s and has been on our board for a couple of years.
"Faron has been involved for more than 20 years and has done amazing work as an instructor and examiner. He is one of the highest ranked guards in New Zealand," he said.
Red Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Chairman Dylan Turner said it was an honour to be there on the night to support both Cornish and Murphy.
"Kevin has given more than 15 years of service for lifesaving and has put his heart and soul into developing lifesavers.
"Colleen is just like a second mum to us, her support for as long as I can remember has been really outstanding and we love her to bits."
