Push for a second new pool facility for poorly-serviced west Auckland
Hold on west Aucklanders - a second new public pool could be on its way.
A new pool facility was already being planned in the Whau area but there could be another in the north-west area.
West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre in Henderson was west Auckland's only public pool, servicing more than 1 million visitors a year.
After years of public debate over the need for another pool, Auckland Council identified the Whau area as the ideal location for a new public pool.
But Henderson-Massey Local Board chairman Shane Henderson said they want a pool service for the north-west area.
And, they were going to push hard for this.
"We feel that any proposed pool in the Whau serves a different catchment and will not affect demand in the area we propose," Henderson said.
Massey, Westgate, Kumeu and West Harbour were already poorly served. With growth of up to 40,000 extra residents the demand would be more urgent in those suburbs, he said.
"Lines at West Wave during the school holidays are often out the door and into the carpark.
"I have real concerns that our excellent Henderson pool is suffering from overuse, and maintenance demands will increase."
The west Auckland community have been demanding for a new public pool for some time and the local board had been advocating this for years, he said.
"We are seeking the support of councillors and will redouble our efforts to get this across the line."
