Small fire that broke out at Jewish Community Centre has been contained
A fire in the building that houses the Jewish Community Centre in Wellington has been contained.
The fire started in a refrigeration area of the Webb St building in the central city, assistant area commander Michael Dombroski said.
The fire was ablaze but contained to a small area.
There was a "huge" amount of smoke that went through the building meaning occupants – including a kindergarten and the Holocaust Centre – were evacuated from the building.
Seven fire trucks were called to the scene just after midday on Thursday, and Webb St was cordoned off.
The fire's cause will be investigated.
Fire and Emergency NZ were at the scene, and Webb St was reopened at 1.40pm.
One police unit from Kilbirnie was also in attendance helping with traffic diversions.
