Ryan Glen Crisp, a 22-year-old from Gisborne, has been named as the man killed in a fatal crash near Wairoa on Sunday.

Police released his name on Wednesday.

Crisp was killed after his car crashed on Awamate Rd in Frasertown, just after 7.30pm on September 10.

Three others were injured in the crash.

One man was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a critical condition, but is now stable.

Two other men were taken to Wairoa Hospital for treatment, and have since been discharged.

The cause of the crash and the circumstances surrounding it were still under investigation, police said.

Earlier in the week, they said the car failed to stop after police tried to pull it over at 7.27pm on Sunday night.

The driver then allegedly fled from police, and at 7.30pm police abandoned the pursuit as they could no longer see the car.

Police said they received a report that a car had crashed about 10 minutes later.

A serious crash unit investigation is under way, and the pursuit has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
