Stuff Sessions: watch Theia's upbeat Drake cover
In the third of our Stuff Sessions,an exclusive series of recording sessions with leading Kiwi musicians, we hear from one of New Zealand's most-streamed artists, Theia.
It might be the depths of winter, but Theia chose Drake's One Dance, a song she performed during summer gigs, as the cover version for her Stuff Session.
"It's such a cool summer tune," says Theia. "Drake is a really smart lyricist and writer."
Theia's version of One Dance in the footage above, is a soulful reinterpretation of the Canadian rapper's song.
The original has had over one billion Spotify streams and was one of the biggest tracks of 2016 worldwide, but Theia's take is a fresh look at a tune most wil be familiar with.
The cover was one part of her full Stuff Session, which you can see below. It also includes her new single, Treat You, which she describes as "an ode to youth and having fun: I wrote a song that everyone could dance to and move to and was really upbeat, 'cos my other singles were quite moody."
Theia - real name Em-Haley Walker - worked as a lifeguard, a shop assistant and a primary school teacher before breaking into music, but since then it's been all good for her. She originally performed as Plum, before signing with Warner Music and adopting the name of the Greek goddess of light and it was her first single under that name, Roam, which at one stage became the most-played song by a Kiwi artist on commercial radio. The song has now had 7.7m Spotify streams - and Theia is averaging 450,000 Spotify listeners each month.
