David Bowie had a sex addiction that saw him sleeping with 13-year-olds and participating in orgies, a new book on the music legend claims.

The book also claims he snorted so much cocaine he had to have cartilage removed from his body and put in his nose, was once offered a dead body to sleep with (he declined) and was fixated with Hitler.

The Daily Mail reports the biography David Bowie: A Life by author and British GQ editor Dylan Jones reveals a wild side to Bowie, who allegedly wrestled with his demons until "well into the '80s".

Bowie, who died of cancer in January 2016 at the age of 69, was "his very own creation, his very own work of art. This was the boy from postwar Brixton with his sights set on the world," writes Jones in the book, which will be released in the UK on September 7.

Drawn from over 180 interviews with friends, rivals, lovers and collaborators, some of whom have not previously spoken about their relationships with Bowie, the biography claims things got so bad in the mid-1970s that he weighed just 95 lbs (43kgs), was snorting seven grams of cocaine a day, believed he was possessed by the devil and that the Manson family might come after him - even though they were already in jail.

According to Jones' book, Bowie was heavily addicted to sex, cocaine, nicotine and caffeine, and it wasn't until 1990 that Bowie met supermodel Iman at a dinner party and turned his life around.

The pair remained married until Bowie's death.
