Riverdale, Shortland Street star KJ Apa crashes car after 14+ hour day
Kiwi actor KJ Apa has been involved in a car crash after a long day of filming for US show Riverdale.
Warner Brothers confirmed the star had crashed his car, but disputed claims he crashed while driving after a 16 hour day.
The star wasn't injured but US media reported the crash sparked anger on the show's set, and demands for safer working conditions. It was said Apa crashed just after midnight on Thursday (local time).
A Warner Television spokesman said Apa crashed after working just over 14 hours. The crash happened Thursday, he said, and a doctor visited the star later that day.
"Our actors do not work every day," he said. According to the spokesman, Apa had worked only two and a half hours the day before, and almost eight hours on the day before that.
"KJ has repeatedly been informed about making production aware if he is tired or feels unsafe, and if so, either a ride or hotel room will be provided for him," the spokesman said in an email.
The Hollywood Reporter said Apa had fallen asleep at the wheel after midnight. While receiving no injuries, Apa's car was reportedly written off after the passenger side ran into a street post. Warner Bros was asked what time the crash happened but did not provide a response.
Apa had been filming in Vancouver, Canada, for the Warner Brothers-produced Riverdale.
The Warner Bros spokesman said Apa was seen by first responders after the crash and the company then sent a doctor to his home.
A call to Apa's New Zealand agent went unanswered Friday morning.
Apa had been starring on Riverdale for about two years, after starting his acting career on Shortland Street in 2013.
The 20-year-old actor played Archie in the Archie Comics adaption. Apa was filming for the second season of Riverdale when the crash happened.
