Growing up New Zealand: The Game
Elliot Collis, a New Zealander living in Japan, has taken to Kickstarter to seek funding for a game project about his experience growing up in Aotearoa.
The game, titled desolate, will explore themes of depression, consumption, and self-realisation through seven acts. "In the beginning of the game shadowy figures have invaded your village and you must sacrifice your friends and family to them in order to escape," explains the Kickstarter page.
"After realising what you've done wrong you need to fix the mistakes you've made. But not all mistakes can be fixed by apologising. Sometimes change is needed, but reluctantly sought. Sooner or later you will have to face your inner shadows and your inner self to change for the better."
New Zealand landscapes, primarily from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, serve as the basis for the game's handpainted, 2D backdrops, and sit in contrast to buildings and structures based on Tokyo's architecture. This will be supported with music created by Kiwi musician Ben Tolich.
As far as gameplay goes, desolate is a puzzle adventure game with platforming elements, though these mechanics will be distorted throughout the game as a result of the main character's soul-searching.
Pledges ranges from $6 to $1800, with each pledge tier containing various bonuses. The minimum pledge that includes a copy of the game when it releases is $12.
