The Canadian comedian's most recognisable role was that of his 26-year long stint on the hit US and UK television show, Whose Line Is it Anyway? - which tested the quick wit of a panel of improvisational experts through fast-paced games and skits each episode.

What was especially exciting about participating in the Improv Bandits' 20th-anniversary show was the unknown aspects which came when performing in unfamiliar territory and with those who he'd never worked with before, he said.

"It makes me go back to the basics of improv, where you listen and are there to make your partner look good and accept their ideas, so it's nice to be a little afraid again.

"I'm sure I'll be getting local references for suggestions which I will have no idea about.

Sandringham resident and Improv Bandits founder Wade Jackson said he approached Mochrie a couple of years ago about performing in the celebration show while working in Vancouver.

"Colin's the consummate professional, he's such a team player, yes he's one of the worlds best improvisers but he just likes to slot into a performance."

Established in 1997, the Improv Bandits have gained an international reputation over the years, winning numerous awards including the 2002 Improv World Champs.

Audiences could expect a two-part show on the night, with the first half consisting of familiar Whose Line Is it Anyway? styled games and the second half being an improvised long-form story, Jackson said.

"As far as I am concerned, value for money, it's going to be the comedy show of the year."
