Neat Places: where to enjoy a raw chocolate treat in Christchurch
Chocolate comes in many forms, and there's no denying it's a tasty treat that many of us indulge in. But there can be too much of a good thing, and while chocolate might be delicious, it isn't exactly what you'd call a healthy snack. That is, unless you're eating one of our favourite raw chocolate slices. Made from natural ingredients, mostly refined sugar-free and oh-so-delicious, you'll be surprised to learn there is such a thing as healthy chocolate.
The Herb Centre
223 Kilmore St
The Herb Centre's Ferrero Rocher raw vegan tart is one of its most popular treats, and for good reason. The decadent slice is just the right balance of sweet and nutty, and uses dates and raw cacao to make a chocolate layer, finished off with a slightly sweet cashew nut base. Refined sugar-free, dairy-free and vegan, it's an ideal afternoon pick-me-up for chocolate lovers.
363 St Asaph St
A base of organic dates, coconut and cacao, followed by a layer of dark chocolate mocha and coffee, topped with vanilla cashew cream and cacao... If that isn't enough to tempt you to try The Lotus-Heart's dreamy mocha slice, nothing will. The nutrient-dense slice is surprisingly filling, and coffee-lovers are bound to love the rich flavours of this sweet treat. It's low-glycemic and refined sugar free and we reckon it's 100 per cent guilt free too.
95 Westminster St
Using what's arguably the country's most loved chocolate is a sure-fire way to create a treat most customers will love. And that's exactly what The Origin has done, using Whittaker's 72% dark chocolate to create its Chocolate Mousse Cake. The gluten-free and vegan sweet treat is made with walnuts, dates, raisins and a hearty serving of dark chocolate. Coconut oil also gives the cake a light and velvety smooth texture. We can almost guarantee there won't be any leftovers.
Make it Raw
Available at: Piko Wholefoods and Fridays at the Ohoka Farmers' Market
Make it Raw knows just how to make treats using natural ingredients that hit the spot, yet won't expand the waistline. Its peppermint slice uses cacao powder and cacao butter to create a rich slice, balanced with flavoursome peppermint oil, giving a minty alternative to the classic chocolate slice. Sweetened with agave, and packed with natural goodness like coconut oil, almonds and raisins, this slice is ideal for those who can't resist a mint-flavoured treat.
31 Birmingham Drive
If you've visited Pure Cafe before, you'll know its focus on healthy food doesn't mean a compromise on flavour. The cafe offers plenty of tasty raw treats, proving that natural ingredients can be every bit as flavoursome as artificial ingredients, and they're better for the body! Choosing from the selection of tasty slices can be difficult, but for chocolate lovers, it's hard to go past the mocha slice. Full of rich flavour, and made with cacao, espresso, nuts and seeds, each bite is crunchy and satisfying and far too easy to eat. Unlike sugary slices, it'll give you plenty of energy to help you get through the afternoon slump.
