Nelson's Seifried Estate recognised for champion wines at Royal Easter Show Wine Awards

Nelson's Seifried Estate has scooped a number of awards in one of the country's oldest wine competitions.

Two of Seifried's wines were crowned trophy winners at the 2020 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland on Saturday.

The Seifried Winemakers Collection Sweet Agnes Riesling took home the Auckland Agricultural & Pastoral Association Heritage Rosebowl, while the Old Coach Road Nelson Gewürztraminer 2019 was crowned the Winezeal Enterprises Award for Champion Gewürztraminer.

Winemaker Chris Seifried said the family were thrilled to receive the rosebowl trophy as it looked at the quality of the Sweet Agnes Riesling over several vintages, in this case those from 2009, 2014 and 2019.

"That is great recognition as what it showed us is that quality and consistency of the wine over a long period of time."

He said the recognition for the Gewürztraminer was important for Seifried as it was a small volume wine not many people knew about. The family had grown it since 1973 when his parents, Agnes and Hermann Seifried, first planted grapes in the Moutere Valley.

"It's not a fashionable variety, its niche and we are well-known for it."

The word gewürz meant spice in German and the wne typically had a strong flavour and was well suited to food with "a lot of punch", such as Thai or Indian dishes that contained coriander or coconut milk.

"It is quite a rich, spicy wine with lots of apricot, nectarine and rose petal flavours."

Sales manager Anna Seifried said Old Coach Road was an everyday, affordable brand and the trophy for the Gewürztraminer was proof that wine didn't need to cost a lot to taste good.

"It is also a reflection of the 2019 harvest which we knew was great when the fruit was coming in after a hot, dry, long summer."

Anna said the winery had done well in various competitions with its 2019 wines and also received a gold medal at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards for the Aotea by the Seifried Family Nelson 2019 Sauvignon Blanc.

The awards, which have been held since 1953, are part of New Zealand's oldest national wine competition.

Last year Seifried Estate Sauvignon Blanc Nelson 2019 won the Champion Open White Wine, Champion Sauvignon Blanc and Best Wine - Nelson at the New Zealand Wine Awards.
