Food Review: Rocket Espresso Bar, Hamilton East
A taste of... Rocket Espresso Bar, 385 Grey Street, Hamilton East.
We'd heard... Not a lot. I've never really noticed it before and was curious about what it had to offer down a busy street lined with hoards of cafes.
We ordered... Salsa corn fritters from the cabinet ($8.50), with a side of raw beetroot salad for $3. The fluffy fritters were almost perfect and the salsa was tangy and fresh. The beetroot salad was sweet, plentiful and had a hint of cumin that paired well. Bacon would have sent them to soaring heights.
I The turmeric smoothie ($8) was fresh and sweet but I'm yet convinced that turmeric has a flavour. There was cinnamon in there which dominated the taste and added chia seeds made it a bit slimy. Points earned for trendiness but it didn't do it for me.
You can't go too wrong with salmon, cream cheese and capers but the bagel ($11) was lack lustre. My dining partner was happy with her iced coffee ($6).
The service... Was pleasant. The staff that served us were polite and efficient but one of them seemed new and a little confused. They left us alone after we ordered which was nice if you're like me and prefer it low maintenance.
The vibe... Was cosy and relaxed. We sat at the bar by the windows to soak up the midday sun and enjoy the bustle from outside. The good fairy helped us score a park right outside the cafe but others might not be so lucky. It's luck of the draw along the street and parking can be scarce.
If you go... Go for the coffee and sit at the bar if it's sunny. It's a perfect place to duck out for a quick, cheap lunch break if you work close by.
Try to avoid... The bagels.
