The Ribbon set to create stunning new gateway into Sydney CBD
Leading architectural firm Hassel has released details of a stunning new building that will transform the Sydney skyline, creating a new gateway on the west side of the CBD.
The Ribbon is designed to sit between two elevated roadways between the high-rise city to the east and Darling Harbour to the west.
And it's not just a pretty face – the 25-storey building will be a new hotel, office, retail and entertainment complex.
Hassel says The Ribbon is named for its undulating form that rises through two elevated roadways. "The building's organic, flowing shape appears to peel up the surrounding roadways and manipulate them into a new structure that complements the changing landscape between the city and Darling Harbour."
The building will provide 1800 square metres of retail space, 10,000 square metres of new or enhanced public spaces, more than 400 hotel rooms, and more than 140 serviced apartments.
The company says the development, by Grocon, will contain modern new premises for the IMAX theatre currently on site, and make the public spaces at ground level more vibrant and engaging for visitors.
It will also improve sightlines over the harbour and create pedestrian connections across Cockle Bay and from the Harbour through to Darling Quarter.
Completion is set for 2020.
