A downed power line delayed fire crews battling a grass fire near Rangitīkei Line, just outside Palmerston North.

Emergency services were called to the fire about 3.30pm on Thursday near the corner of Rangitikei and Hansen lines.

A police spokesman said officers were called to the scene about 4pm to help with traffic control.

Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman Chris Dalton said efforts to put the fire out were hindered by a downed power line, which may have been what started the blaze.

Firefighters couldn't safely approach and extinguish the fire until power company technicians arrived and turned off the power at 4.15pm.
