Two injured in truck crash on Tararua highway

Police said the pair in the truck were taken to hospital.

Police said the pair in the truck were taken to hospital.

Two people were taken to hospital after a bread delivery truck rolled in the Tararua district this morning.

"The driver had a sore shoulder, but was walking and talking. The driver and a passenger were transported to [Palmerston North] hospital," a police spokeswoman said.

The truck was heading north from Woodville, when it crashed off the side of State Highway 2 just before a passing lane, at 4.45am on Sunday.

No other vehicles were involved.

Woodville chief fire officer Eric Bonny, said the driver knew he was toast when a massive gust of wind hit the side of the truck, causing it to roll.

"It was left laying on it's side, it didn't look good. It was a bread truck, so everything was crumbs."

Firefighters directed traffic jammed at the scene, before the highway was closed and deviations put place while heavy recovery machinery was used to remove the vehicle.

The road was cleared and reopened by 10.30am, the police spokeswoman said.
