A police spokeswoman said advised motorists to watch out for anything blown on to the Desert Rd by the high winds.

Poor weather conditions on the Desert Rd could have forced three cars into a ditch, police say.

Emergency services were called after three cars ended up in the ditch beside the Desert Rd, between Paradise Valley and Wāipakihi roads, about 21 kilometres north of Waiouru, at 12pm on Tuesday.

A police spokeswoman said gravel scattered across the road by the high winds in the area may have contributed to the crash.

Although nobody was injured, she advised motorists to drive to the conditions and keep an eye out for anything blown on to the road.
