Power lines were left lying across one of the main roads into Kaikōura on Tuesday after a road contractor crashed into a lamppost.

The Inland Rd, or route 70, was closed for two hours after emergency services responded to the crash about 1pm.

Kaikōura Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Ian Walker said the incident happened about 40 kilometres up the Inland Rd, out of Kaikōura.

Two fire engines, an ambulance, police and a rescue helicopter were called.

Walker said the man had minor injuries, but was flown to Christchurch Hospital as a precaution.

The highway was closed while Mainpower disconnected the power, and the fire service removed the pole from across the road.
