Bella's Team battle hard
Bella's Team had an up and down night during the latest round of Marlborough premier volleyball on Thursday.
They played a double header at Marlborough Lines Stadium, winding up with a win and a loss against tough opposition.
First up they met reigning champs Uso. Both sides started well, Afa Lauvai hitting hard for Uso while Cameron Alexander's blocking was on point for Bella's Team. Phil Ligaliga got some powerful spikes in for Bella's Team but Uso proved a more cohesive unit and won 25-19. The second set went point-for-point before Uso stepped up towards the end to prevail 25-23. The third set was also mighty close, but this time Bella's Team, with a fine display of setting and hitting, scored the required two points to win 20-18.
Bella's Team then went on to play Defying Gravity. Already warmed up, they dominated the first set, winning 25-14 before Defying Gravity came to life in the second, prevailing 25-19. After their earlier loss, Bella's Team were determined not to drop another game and dug deep to win the third set 25-17. Phil Ligaliga again hit well, while Shiloh Walsh served well for Defying Gravity.
Cri Clovers made a slow start against Fairweathers, who came out with guns blazing to take the first set 25-11. The second set was closer, Fairweathers taking it out 25-20, then they upped the ante in the third, racing to an early lead which they never relinquished to win 25-14 on the back of some solid hitting from Nigel Sowman. Hunter Nicholls impressed on defence for Cri Clovers, while Senei Manoa provided a good serving run.
Treefellas put Salt and Pepper on the back foot with a good first set win, 25-17, before Salt and Pepper came back fighting to take the second 25-22. They continued their momentum in the third to win that and the game 25-18, with some good spikes from Jack Pope.
