Kennedy gets table tennis nod
Alex Kennedy is the table tennis nominee for the 2017 Marlborough Sports Awards after producing yet another highly-successful season.
At the Marlborough Open in May he qualified in the men's singles, won the under-18 doubles and was runner-up in the under-18 singles.
In June, he took out the under-18 singles and doubles at the Nelson Open and also won the under-21 doubles.
The 17-year-old was the fourth seed in the boys under-18 singles at the South Island championships in Nelson in August, reaching the semi finals of the boys singles and winning the D grade doubles. In local play he won the closed singles title for a second time, after first prevailing as a 15-year-old in 2015. He compiled a superb record in interclub play, winning 50 out of 51 matches.
Kennedy won five out of eight matches in the South Island under-18 teams tournament in June and forged an unbeaten record as Marlborough beat Nelson in the junior rep match for the Angell Shield. He also played at number two in the senior men's rep team.
His contribution is not restricted to playing, Kennedy giving his time freely to help coach junior players.
His nomination is sponsored by Kennedy Connections Electrical Services.
