At 7pm a commuter was reporting that northbound traffic on Wellington's urban motorway was clogged all the way back to the Terrace Tunnel.

Commuters on both highways out of Wellington have been plagued by delays after two separate three-car collisions on Thursday afternoon.

Northbound motorists on SH 1 along the Kāpiti Coast were warned to expect delays after three cars collided in a nose-to-tail crash.

Police were called to the scene about three kilometres north of Pukerua Bay at 3.30pm, along the northbound coastal road.
