Elderly man died after falling off ladder while cutting tree branch
The Taranaki man who died after he fell off a ladder while cutting down tree branches has been identified as 76-year-old Ronald Ian Martin.
Martin was at a Stanners St property in Eltham on Saturday afternoon when he fell from the ladder he had been using.
At the time he was cutting branches off a tall tree at the address.
Neil Shotter lived at the property where the accident happened.
He said he and Martin had previously discussed cutting down a branch off an old walnut tree, which was growing at the back of Shotter's property.
Shotter said Martin was probably about 6 metres off the ground before the fall.
When Shotter found Martin, he was unconscious and lying on the ground.
A call was made for an ambulance about 2pm but Shotter said as the closest was stationed in Inglewood, the rescue helicopter was sent to assist.
The helicopter arrived shortly afterwards, landing about 500 metres from the accident site, he said.
A police media spokeswoman said medical assistance was offered to Martin, but he died at the scene.
"Police extend their condolences to the family of Mr Martin at this time," she said.
Shotter said police officers remained at the address for a period of time, where they took photographs of the scene before Martin's body was removed about 5.30pm.
