Flooding at the Basin Reserve in Wellington closes a lane.

Heavy rain caused flooding around Wellington's Basin Reserve and rock falls on the Kapiti Coast as the region received yet another dousing.

Most of the country was lashed with showers or rain on Monday. The heaviest falls were in central areas, including downtown Wellington, which was drenched during a lunchtime deluge.

MetService meteorologist Sarah Sparks said 10mm to 20mm of rain had fallen in Wellington by 1pm on Monday. In the hill suburb of Kelburn, 14mm fell in just one hour.

Across the region the lunchtime deluge averaged about 7mm of rainfall an hour.

It forced the New Zealand Transport Agency to close a lane of State Highway 1 at the Basin Reserve cricket ground. The wet weather also caused falling rocks south of Paekakariki, on the Kapiti Coast, and surface flooding on SH1 between Porirua and Tawa.

Sparks said the southerly showers could return on Monday night.

The middle of the week was shaping up better across the Wellington region with rain and southerlies set to ease on Tuesday, making way for a fine Wednesday before rain, showers and northerly gales return at the end of the week.
