Fishermen rescue hypothermic teens in Coromandel Peninsula
Two teenage boys were hypothermic after falling from kayaks off the coast of Whangamata.
The Hamilton teens, both 15, had to be airlifted to hospital after spending 20 minutes in the water near Clark Island, or Hauturu.
Rough seas stopped the boys getting back in their kayaks, and they were rescued by passing fishermen, a statement from the Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter said.
The fishermen took the boys to shore and the waiting rescue helicopter.
Both boys were flown to Tauranga Hospital suffering hypothermia.
