Three missing women, young girl found safe in 'rugged' area near Dunedin
Three young women and a 4-year-old girl who went missing in a "rugged" area near Dunedin have been found safe and well.
Dozens of volunteers were out searching for Melissa Bowley, Lauren Rees, Meg Pidegeon, all 22, and Skyla Bowley in Silver Peaks, near Dunedin, after they failed to return home from an afternoon walk on Friday.
A helicopter using night vision goggles found the group about 1am on Saturday, after they picked up the light from a cellphone screen.
The group was checked over by medical staff and apart from being very cold, they were uninjured.
In addition to the helicopter, about 35 police and LandSAR volunteers were searching with dogs.
Police said the incident was "a timely reminder" that people should always be properly prepared and follow the outdoor safety code.
