Thousands have reported feeling a 4.6-magnitude earthquake that struck near Palmerston North.

The tremor hit 15 kilometres south of Dannevirke at a depth of 33km, according to GeoNet.

It was felt widely throughout the lower North Island, when it hit at 7.40pm.
