Mum, baby, spin out swerving to avoid head-on crash near Whanganui
A mum was left shaken and her baby crying after the pair spun out into the path of oncoming traffic in order to avoid a head on crash.
Nicola, who did not want her last name used, and baby Emily were travelling north on State Highway 3 towards Whanganui on Saturday, when a blue Mazda travelling towards them suddenly crossed the centre line into their path.
Dashcam video showed the Mazda waiting in a median strip before turning into Pauri Rd, just as Nicola approached.
The mother quickly slammed on her brakes and swerved to the left to avoid smashing head-on into the car.
The sudden evasive manoeuvre made her lose control, and spin out into the oncoming passing lane.
Once the car stopped spinning Nicola put her hazard lights on and pulled over until she had calmed down.
Her husband Bruce said it was extremely luckily there was no oncoming traffic at the time.
"Nikki was quite shaken, and you can hear Emily start crying once the car stops."
Bruce was horrified to know the driver of the Mazda fled the scene without checking to see if his wife was okay.
"Everyone make mistakes, but I will be referring the matter to the police, as I am not impressed with the other driver fleeing the scene of a [near] accident."
