Fatal crash closes State Highway 1 at Huntly
One person has died after a car and truck collided in Huntly.
Police closed down State Highway 1 at Huntly after a reported head-on crash on State Highway 1 near the intersection of Fisher Road.
The crash happened around 1.10pm on Wednesday and the highway reopened around 6pm.
"The driver of the car has died and the truck driver has moderate injuries," a police statement said.
"The person who died is yet to be formally identified and police are in the process of notifying their next of kin."
A St John spokesperson confirmed one person had died and a second person had been taken to Waikato Hospital by road in a minor condition.
Diversions were in place at Tainui Bridge and East Mine Road but heavy vehicles were unable to travel over Tainui Bridge.
Sergeant Neil Mansell said police were working to examine the crash scene but it appeared the truck was heading north and the car south when they collided in the southbound lane.
Police thanked motorists for their patience.
