Morning gales for a few on Friday, long fine periods on the cards for weekend
Morning gales are expected in the Canterbury high country and in the deep south on Friday morning, while most western areas look likely to get some rain or at least showers at some time during the day.
Saturday is looking pretty good for the North Island, with just a chance of isolated showers in the west. MetService expects the South Island to be less settled on Saturday, although it is forecasting a fine day in the north and northeast of the island.
A few more showers could show up in parts of the North Island on Sunday but there should still be fine spells. In the east and south of the South Island, showers aren't expected to be too much of a problem on Sunday, and should become confined to the south during the day. Heavy rain is expected on the West Coast.
This weekend should be drier and brighter than the last one, MetService forecaster Cameron Coutts said. The features moving over the country would be weaker than a week ago.

Warmer and drier conditions continued over the eastern North Island throughout the weekend, he said. Unfortunately, conditions would be more unsettled over western areas,especially for the South Island which could expect periods of rain, some heavy.
Cloudy periods with light evening rain and an 18C high are forecast for Auckland on Friday. Some light rain is possible on Saturday morning but things should improve from there.
Wellington could get a few showers around the middle of the day on Friday but could be dry for much of the rest of the day, with a 15C high expected. Saturday could be mostly fine but with a chance of showers developing in the evening, while on Sunday showers are expected to become confined to the north.
A 23C high is forecast for Christchurch on Friday, with a largely dry day expected. Conditions are expected to deteriorate on Saturday but sunshine is forecast to be back on Sunday. It won't be as warm on the weekend as on Friday, with highs of 18C forecast.
Gisborne and Hawke's Bay are looking particularly good on Saturday, with a forecast for sunshine, light winds and highs in the low 20s.
