Police are at the scene of a crash on State Highway 1, near Taupo (file pic).

One person is in a critical condition following a crash on State Highway 1 near Taupō.

The person was the driver of the car which hit a barrier just south of Wairakei at 4.15pm.

"The car is blocking traffic in both directions," a police spokeswoman said.

The road has been closed between Wairakei roundabout and Centennial Drive. 

"Diversions are in place but they are a long way from the crash site, so we're asking people to delay their travel."
