Police investigate a fatal crash where a car left State Highway 6 and ended up in a vineyard.

A man charged with reckless driving causing death after a car crashed into a vineyard is challenging the police version of events.

Police claim Stewart Douglas Edward Holdem, 36, was driving recklessly in Marlborough on March 24.

The car left State Highway 6 near the Kaituna-Tuamarina Rd turnoff, north of Renwick, and ploughed into a vineyard.

Three people in the car were injured, while a fourth person was killed in the crash.

Holdem was charged with reckless driving causing death, and two counts of reckless driving causing injury.

He did not enter a plea at his appearance at the Blenheim District Court on Monday, but his lawyer Emma Riddell requested a hearing for a sentencing indication.

Holdem disputed the police summary of facts, she said.

He was remanded on bail to a sentencing indication on July 7.
