A man has denied animal cruelty and poaching charges after allegations he shot a lamb and left it to suffer.

Police claimed Marlborough Sounds man Antony Philip Duff, 34, was hunting wild animals on private property without permission on June 10.

They also claimed he shot a lamb in the neck and jaw with a hunting arrow and left it to suffer.

Duff, of Waitaria Bay in the Kenepuru Sound, denied the charges at the Blenheim District Court on Monday.
