Unsolved Ruatoria hit-and-run to feature on Police Ten 7
Police are hoping television exposure of a fatal hit-and-run more than three months ago near the East Coast settlement of Ruatoria will help solve the crime.
Local man Nelson Hari, 25, was struck by two cars on Tapuaeroa Rd and died at the scene on April 16.
He had been at a wedding at nearby Te Heapera Marae when he decided to walk home around midnight.
The case featured as "crime of the week" on TV2's Police Ten 7 show on Thursday evening.
About 12.30am a vehicle travelling towards the marae on Tapuaeroa Rd saw something on the road and, on closer inspection, realised it was a person, Detective Sergeant Glen Burrell said.
Hari was given first aid at the scene, but could not be revived.
"Police believe two vehicles struck him that night, the first knocking him to the ground and the second as he was lying on the road.
"Police have identified the second car and its driver, but speaking to the driver of the first car which struck Nelson as he was walking is crucial to the investigation.
In the days after Hari's death, police seized and forensically examined a vehicle belonging to a "person of interest", but no arrests were made.
Burrell urged the people in the second vehicle to contact Gisborne police immediately on 06 869 0200. Alternatively, information could be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
