A Manawatu man is in a serious condition in hospital after suffering a head injury in a central Palmerston North street.

The 20-year-old, from Feilding, is in a drug-induced coma in the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital.

Family members have gathered at his side, police Detective Sergeant Grayson Joines said, in a statement.

The man was walking along Main St about 10.30pm on Saturday with a group of friends when he stopped to talk to people in a parked vehicle. The police statement did not say where on Main St this happened.

The man's friends continued walking, but when they turned, they saw him lying in the road, having suffered "a serious head injury", Joines said.

Witnesses were helping police investigate the cause of the injury.

Police want to speak with a blonde-haired woman driving the vehicle, in which two men were passengers.

Anyone with information can call Palmerston North police on 06 351 3600, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
