A 48-year-old woman has died in the Christchurch Central Police cells after an apparent medical event.

District Commander Superintendent John Price said officers went to wake the woman to give her breakfast about 6am on Friday to find she was unresponsive.

"Our staff started doing CPR and then ambulance were called, but unfortunately she wasn't able to be revived," he said.

"Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the family at this sad time. Also to my staff who had to be involved in trying to do CPR … when someone dies, it's still hard on them."

Price was unable to comment on what caused the death, but said it was not being treated as suspicious.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the death had been referred to the Coroner and the Independent Police Conduct Authority. Canterbury police were also investigating.
